SUMMARY:Speaker Series: When the Declaration Was News
DESCRIPTION:Publishing for the 250th anniversary of the United States\, When the Declaration of Independence Was News focuses on the nation’s founding document at the moment of its creation in 1776\, before anyone knew what the legacy of the Declaration would be or if the United States would win the war against Great Britain. It explores how the Declaration was communicated to people in the new nation and around the Atlantic world and reveals the stories of the many people involved in the process of declaring independence\, from printers to soldiers to diplomats to translators. \nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Emily Sneff is an early American historian and leading expert on the Declaration of Independence. A graduate of John Hopkins University and the University of William and Mary\, her interest in the Declaration of Independence began at the American Philosophical Society\, where she was a member of the museum’s curatorial team for a series of exhibitions on Thomas Jefferson. Her career also led her to Harvard University where she was the Research Manager of the Declaration Resources Project. \nShe is currently a consulting curator for exhibitions planned for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration at the Museum of the American Revolution and the American Philosophical Society. Her recently published book\, When the Declaration Was News\, traces the dissemination of the Declaration of Independence through the United States and around the Atlantic in the summer and fall of 1776. You can learn more about Dr. Sneff’s work on her website\, emilysneff.com.

SUMMARY:"Black Freedom Suits and the Declaration of Independence"
DESCRIPTION:The Declaration of Independence asserted that “all men are created equal” and have natural rights and the right of self-government by consent. Slavery contradicted these core principles of the Declaration of Independence as America’s creedal document. Using the Declaration of Independence as their “North Star\,” they launched “freedom petitions” and “freedom suits\,” making a claim on natural rights with unexpected and surprising outcomes. Part one of the 2026 Spring Speaker Series. Tickets required.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: George Washington and the Presidential Title Controversy of 1789
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Kathleen Bartoloni-Tuazon for an engaging exploration of one of the earliest and most revealing debates in American history—the 1789 controversy over the president’s title. Drawing from her book For Fear of an Elective King\, she will uncover why Congress and the public fiercely argued over whether George Washington should be addressed as “His Highness” or simply “President.” Her talk will highlight how this seemingly ceremonial question exposed deep anxieties about power and the fragility of the new republic.  Attendees will learn how Washington’s own choices shaped the presidency\, as well as reinforced certain ideals. \nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Kathleen Bartoloni-Tuazon is an expert on the early presidency and is a thought leader in her field. \nShe received her doctorate from George Washington University and found a welcome intellectual environment at the First Federal Congress Project (FFCP) in Washington D.C. where she was Visiting Scholar\, contributing to a project to document of all material related to America’s first Congress under the new Constitution\, which is now a part of the Washington National Library at Mount Vernon in Virginia. \nShe has been interviewed by National Public Radio and has had opinion pieces in The Economist and The Boston Globe. She has appeared several times on C-SPAN and lectures on the presidency\, the evolution of executive power\, and the Washington administration.  Her book\, For Fear of an Elective King\, has been recommended by sources as varied as Vanity Fair\, Presidential Studies Quarterly\, The Journal of the Early Republic and The American Historical Review. She is also author of \nShe is the author of For Fear of an Elective King: George Washington and the Presidential Title Controversy of 1789\, a richly researched account of how a seemingly small question—what to call the president—became a defining moment for our country and executive legitimacy.

SUMMARY:Feuding Founders: The Lee Deane Conflict and the Political "Bloodbath" of 1778
DESCRIPTION:How did a diplomatic dispute become one of the first political media storms in American history? \nJoin us at Stratford Hall for a commemorative America 250 conversation on the aftermath of the Lee Deane Conflict. In 1776\, Silas Deane of Connecticut was sent to France to secure crucial wartime support. He came under fire when Arthur Lee\, a Virginian also posted in Europe\, accused Deane of profiteering and fraud. The matter exploded into the public sphere when Deane fired back\, charging Arthur Lee with spying for the British and sharing information with them. Virginia congressmen Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee found themselves defending their family’s reputation amid a fierce smear campaign that played out in the pages of newspapers up and down the Eastern seaboard. John Jay\, then president of Congress\, was drawn into the dispute as well\, with consequences that would shadow his diplomatic career for years. As accusations and defenses spilled from private correspondence into newspapers\, the reputations of all four men were tested before a watching public. \nThis is a day for people who want to see how the Revolution unfolded not only in congresses and courts\, but in print and in public opinion. Begin the morning with a tour of Menokin\, Francis Lightfoot Lee’s home\, before traveling to nearby Stratford Hall to walk the grounds and tour the house where the Lee brothers grew up. Share lunch and conversation\, then hear from scholars representing all four partner sites — Menokin\, Stratford Hall\, the Webb-Deane-Stevens House\, and the John Jay Historic Site — as they examine how the Deane controversy reverberated through the early republic. This Affair affected the reputations of other “feuding fathers” including Thomas Paine\, Ben Franklin and John Adams. It offers a window into the rough-and-tumble politics of the 1770s — and a reminder that the tensions between press\, politics\, and personal reputation are as old as the republic itself. \n  \nSCHEDULE (subject to updates) \n10:00 am – 11:30 am: Tour Menokin house and grounds\, Warsaw\, VA \n12:00 pm – 1:00 pm: Lunch at Stratford Hall\, Montross VA \n1:00 pm – 2:30 pm: Hour long round table discussion plus Q&A on the Lee Deane Conflict with representatives from the historic homes of John Jay (NY)\, Silas Deane (CT)\, Richard Henry Lee (VA) and Francis Lightfoot Lee (VA). \n3:00 pm – 4:30 pm: Tour of Stratford Hall \n5:00 pm  – 6:00 pm: Wrap-up Reception and NNK Symposium Kick off\, Stratford Hall \n6:30 pm – 7:30 Talk: NNK Symposium Keynote [add-on $10] \n Pricing: \n$30 – Sun\, 11/8 Day Pass: Includes Menokin tour\, Stratford tour\, Roundtable\, Reception \n$10 – add-on: NNK symposium keynote on 11/8  \n$15: Roundtable only\, 11/8 at 1 pm: $15 \n$5: Virtual admission only to Roundtable\, 11/8 at 1 pm \nSpecial: $60: Pass to 11/8 “Feuding Fathers” + Pass to 11/9 NNK Symposium
